Painting a wash

Basic one colour wash

A wash can cover the total area of the paper or only a small section (its up to you)

Hold the paper/board at a 30 degree angle

Start from the top of the area you wish to wash

Movement of the brush is down and along

Use plenty of water in your washes

Take your time

Re-load your brush frequently

Tonal wash

As above, once depth has been achieved instead of re-loading brush with paint, re-load it with clean water and continue laying the wash down the page, the colour will gradually become less and less as you need to re-load your brush whilst working the wash down the page.
